When The Road is Dark

Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Psalm 119:105
There is something unsettling about driving in the early hours of the morning or late at night. The world feels unfamiliar. The road, dimly lit, hides what could be just around the corner. I find myself gripping the steering wheel tighter, alert but anxious. I cannot see all the dangers that may be lurking. And in that vulnerability, fear creeps in.
That fear doesn’t just stay behind the wheel. It follows me into other parts of life. I've noticed that I avoid certain activities or events because of it. I choose to stay home, even when an exciting opportunity or adventure is waiting for me. The fear of the unknown, of not being able to "see," becomes louder than the desire to move forward.
It made me realize something deeper: this is often how I respond during moments of crisis.
Just like driving at night, when I’m faced with unexpected circumstances, the chaos and darkness cause me to freeze. I feel alone, paralyzed, unable, and unwilling to move forward. Instead of trusting that God will guide me, I retreat. I convince myself that staying in place—though unfulfilling—is safer.
But that isn’t the life God has called me to live.
In Psalm 119:105, we’re reminded: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This verse doesn’t promise a spotlight that shows the entire road. It offers a lamp, just enough light for the next step. That means even when I can’t see the full picture, God’s Word gives me what I need to keep going.
He speaks through His Word, and in that conversation, He offers comfort, strength, and direction. In Hebrews 13:5b, God promises: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Even when the road feels empty, He is there. Even when fear whispers that I am alone, His presence is steady.
If you're like me—someone who sometimes allows fear to become the driver—know that God’s light is available to guide your steps. You don’t need to see the whole journey to trust the One who walks it with you. He doesn’t just call us into the light—He is the light.
So, the next time the road feels dark, take a breath, open His Word, and let Him illuminate your path. Step by step, He will carry you through.

Heavenly Father,Thank You for being my light in the darkness. When fear threatens to keep me stuck, please remind me that Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Give me the courage to take the next step, even when I can't see the whole way forward. Help me to trust that You are with me, that You go before me, and that You will never leave me nor forsake me.Teach me to rely on Your promises more than my feelings. Replace my fear with faith, my hesitation with hope, and my paralysis with peace. I surrender my worries to You, knowing that You hold the road ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
